10 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health

What should be done to make sure that you stay healthy? If your mental health is out of balance, you may experience high blood pressure, ulcers, chest pain, or a host of other physical symptoms. When you feel good about yourself, it’s much easier to cope with life’s ups and downs as well as more serious events. These strategies will help you to be more resilient and improve mental health.

10 Ways to Improve Your Mental Health1

Take care of your body

Make sure that you eat healthy, avoid cigarettes, use alcohol moderately (a glass of wine or beer a day), get enough sleep (7-8 hours per day) if you are overly tired, every task and responsibility can seem exaggerated, and even small problems will feel like big ones, drink plenty of water (1.5 to 2.5 liters per day) and exercise regularly (at least 3 times a week for an hour).

Stay in touch with family and friends

Regular social contact can be very helpful for people suffering from mental health disorders. Surround yourself with people that provide support and share your feelings with them. Simply call someone, send an e-mail or text message to those you love. It may be hard to open up, but talking to someone you trust about your worries may provide a sense of relief and may be the first step towards recovery. Struggling is not a sign of weakness. We all have good and bad days  and occasionally, we all need someone to lean on. Tough times are an inevitable part of life, but nobody needs to go through difficulties on their own.

Reduce stress

Constant stress can cause long-term negative effect on your mental and physical health. Start with your home: clean the mess, make sure you have enough light in the house and keep some space for relaxation. Having a hobby and taking pride in it is a great way to reduce stress and boost self-esteem. Do things you love – get  actively involved in your community and have  a sense of purpose in your life, such as working in a job you enjoy, studying or volunteering, will  boost your positive feelings.

Laugh and cry

Laughter enhances the immune system, reduces pain and protects the heart from disease. It is also a significant factor in alleviating depression and other mental problems. Laughter reduces tension, stress and nervousness. Crying is good for relieving stress and for your mental health.

Have sex

Intimacy within a committed relationship has all sorts of emotional benefits — it can help make you feel good about yourself and boost self-esteem. Make a schedule that works for you and your trusted partner and simply enjoy!

Meditate or practice yoga

These types of activities are effective for stress management. Meditation is a focused form of guided thought leading to mental calmness. Yoga and Tai Chi, while movement-oriented, are also proven stress remedies.

Express kindness toward someone else

Want to feel good yourself? Make someone else feel good. When you do a good deed for others, that makes them happier, which in turns make you happier, too. Even the smallest gesture can make a difference.

Learn to say no

If you try to do more than you can handle, you will only end up frustrated and stressed out. If someone asks you to do something you absolutely can’t do, say no. At the very least, ask for help. And if you can’t do it, explain why kindly but firmly.

Recognize symptoms

If you recognize symptoms of depression or anxiety in yourself, it is important to take action early. The sooner you get treatment, the sooner you can begin to recover. If left untreated, depression and anxiety can create very serious health problems.

Learn more

Knowledge is power – If you have a problem, learn whatever you can about the issue or the health condition you’re facing. The more you know, the less you will fear what might happen.
