Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder, which affects women five times more than men. In most cases, this irritable inflammation is caused by bacterial infection, cold weather, wearing wet bathing suits and can occur at any time of the year.
About 20 to 40 % of the female population has symptoms of cystitis, which occurs abruptly with symptoms of painful and frequent urination and pain in the lower abdomen.
Other symptomsof urogenital infections are frequent and strong urge to urinate, a feeling of burning sensation when urinating, blood in urine, cloudy urine with a strong odor, and pressure and pain in the lower abdomen.
One twenty-five-year girl once faced this problem, which as he says, if she did not react quickly, will cause additional health problems that will spread to kidneys.
– For several days I felt severe pain in the lower abdomen, and the same pain was there while I went to the bathroom. Lacking experience with cystitis before, I could not even guess what it was. But as the pain increased, so I had to react and went to the gynecologist. After the examinations, the doctor explained to me what it was about and prescribed me antibiotics. Therefore, anyone who feels any symptoms, should immediately visit the doctor – explains 25-year-old girl from Skopje.
According to doctors, women suffer more because of the anatomical features of the urethra, which is shorter and wider apart from the urethra in men, which is narrower and longer.
– This anatomic feature is causing an easier opportunity for penetration of bacteria and their multiplication in the area of internal genitals and anus, which are very close to the female urethra and bladder. Especially cystitis and urogenital infections occur when natural defense mechanism of the urethra and bladder is reduced. It is interesting that cold has influence on reduction of the level of estrogen hormones, which means that the bladder has no protector – estrogen, the immunity weakens and the first symptoms of cystitis appear – say doctors from the Skopje Clinic for Gynaecology.
According to them, there are many reasons that can lead to cystitis.
– Usually this irritable inflammation occurs after exposure to low temperature, long wearing of wet bathing suits, which means it can occur throughout the year. The cause is enteric bacteria such as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus saprophyticus, and enterococcus faecalis. Cystitis can also be transmitted through sexual intercourse and then the main causes are Chlamydia trachomatis, Trichomonas vaginalis, Candida albicans or different types of candidiasis – doctors explain.
Cystitis can often be linked to other factors such as drug cystitis, chemical cystitis associated with using different soaps for intimate care and hormonal cystitis, which can ocure with the use of contraceptive pills or various other hormones.
According to doctors, the treatment must begin on time, after diagnosis, since frequent untreated infections of this type can cause additional health problems.
– If cystitis is not treated on time it can cause kidney damage, infertility or likelihood of premature birth in the future. Diagnosis is made based on the review, as well as biochemical and microbiological tests on urine – doctors say.
In the period when patients have this irritable inflammation, they should consume more fluids during the day, and avoid higher amounts of coffee and other drinks that contain caffeine. Also not to consume carbonated beverages but to drink natural juices and teas, eat more fruits and vegetables that contain vitamin C. For protection, patients should not use common resources for intimate body care. Doctors always recommend to have protected sex and patients to be properly and warmly dressed.
